Saving Money: Free Time

Of course going out is a big part of student life, but you don’t want to go bankrupt over it. Most of the money you spend on a night out will go to drinks and entrance fees for clubs. You can save some money on the latter by going to clubs before they start charging entrance fees, since a lot of clubs don’t start charging until around 11pm or midnight.
You can also save money on drinks by drinking beer instead of ordering expensive mix drinks. If you think you’re not going to be able to control yourself after a couple of drinks, put yourself on a budget and don’t bring any more money than that with you. Leave your debit- or creditcard at home so you really can only spend the money you’ve brought. Also keep an eye out for happy hours to save money on drinks.

Don’t get a creditcard if you have trouble keeping money in the bank. If you don’t have the money, don’t spend it! It’s very tempting to put that new Playstation or TV on your creditcard, but you’re still going to have to pay for it eventually.
Take a look at all your monthly expenses and see what you can cut. For example, subscriptions to magazines can be quite expensive. Instead of subscribing to expensive newspapers, check out articles online or try to get a good deal on your subscription.
www.student.abonnee.nl – This website offers discounts for students and teachers on subscriptions to all sorts of magazines and newspapers, including, The Guardian, Elsevier, Vogue and Wired magazine.

www.studentenvoordeel.nl – This website has a large collection of examples on which you can save money. Did you know for example that students get discounts at a lot of movie theaters? This goes for some hairdressers, restaurants and even bars as well!
