Studying for Exams

What you should do
Start on time.
Read your study books while the classes are still going. Keep track of the reading material which are required for the exam and do a small chunk of each before each lecture/class. Take notes during your class and use these while studying.

Get up early.
You need all the time you can get to study for exams, which means getting up early. Start your day by taking a refreshing shower and eating a balanced healthy breakfast that sets you up until lunch. Maybe grab a cup of coffee or eat an apple (it is said that an apple is more effective in waking you up in the morning than coffee is.).

Study for an hour, take a 10 minute break. Rinse and repeat.
Don't be too hard on yourself. Take breaks in between studying to keep your mind fresh. Also, give yourself more time to eat a healthy lunch in between study sessions. You can't study on an empty stomach, but also try to stay away from snacks and fatty foods.
We'll be posting a blog about what foods are good for studying effectively as well!

Relaxation
Don't overwork yourself. Make sure you do everything you need to do during the day and relax during the evening with a good movie or hang out with some friends.

Rest
Go to bed early because you'll be studying again the next day, or even worse, taking the test. Make sure you're properly rested so you'll have no problem getting up the next day.

What you actually do
Teacher starts the semester by saying; 'This isn't a class you can start studying for a couple of days in advance, so keep track of all the reading materials.'?
Challenge accepted!
A week before your exams start you check out your schedule and see which exam you have on monday. Study the crap out of that exam starting friday, realize you have more than one exam and multitask by switching between the monday and tuesday exam. Because of your poor time management skills you leave the wednesay through friday exams up to fate.

Sleep in.
When your alarm clock goes off at 8am, you curse past-you for setting it at an ungodly hour. Punch the snooze-button a couple of times before unplugging the whole damn thing and pulling the covers over your head. Wake up at 12am with a headache and stumble out of bed to fetch yourself a bowl with sugarcoated cereal and a cup of joe.

Procrastinate.
"I'll start studying in 30 minutes." ...This is usually the thought that sparks everything. "Just this one episode of Community, then I'll start." One episode turns into two, two intro three and before you know it, it's 8pm and you've finished six seasons and a movie.
Then panic hits and you start cursing past-you for procrastinating. Study for 6 hours straight without breaks. Fall asleep on your books with a snickers bar in your hand. Wake up at 5am, panic.

Go to bed at 5am, but set your alarm at 8am. Because you're going to do it differently tomorrow. Yes, keep telling yourself that.

Day of the exam
Get as many summaries from your fellow students as you can. Read them on the way to university. Panic. Keep reading the summaries. Panic some more and take the exam.
Curse yourself during the exam for not starting earlier.
"Next term I'm going to do everything differently... I promise."

Foods that will help you study!

We've all heard the term 'food for thought', but is there any truth in that expression? It’s true; a diet rich in essential fatty acids, fruits and vegetables does wonders for your brain power. How about we give you the this list with brain foods, but combine it with the whimsicality of puns? Let's do this because we're so punny!

1. Fish
You can tune a guitar, but you can't tuna fish. Unless of course, you play bass.
(Any fish that contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, like herring, salmon, tuna, mackerel or anchovies.)

2. Soy
Tofu or not tofu?

3. Colorful and citrus fruits
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

4. Berries
Berry good for studying.

5. Leafy green vegetables
He became a vegetarian because he couldn't make ends meat.

6. Nuts
'Almond joying myself' he said eating nuts.

7. Seeds
A gardener buys super seeds to supersede the garden from the previous year.
8. Chocolate
I was bullied at school. Every day big boys smothered me in chocolate and stuck cherries on my head. Life was tough in the gateaux.

9. Whole grains
Low carb diets really go against the grain.

10. Eggs.
Eggs make lousy comedians. They always crackup at their own yolks.

11. Tea.
Wow, thanks for the tea. I'm glad I got to Chai it.

12. Sage
The elderly chef retired because his sage was showing.
13. Carbohydrate-rich foods
Leftover spaghetti is pasta its prime.

14. Iron-rich foods
Iron was discovered because someone smelt it.

15.  Pulses and Beans
Selling coffee has its perks for those who have bean so lucky.

16. Curry
Insulting an East Indian chef will bring you bad Korma.

17. Calcium-rich foods
We almost got creamed by a milk truck. I was udderly terrified.

18. Supplemental herbs
You should always use basil the day you buy it - as they say, herb today, gone tomorrow.

19. Organic and plant oils
People who make motor oil are very refined.

20. Water
Water you waiting for? Just jump in.

We’re in the mood for some cocktails! Here are some of our favourite recipes.

Springtime Cooler

2 parts of blue curacao
6 parts of orange juice
3 parts of lemon juice
Sugar to taste
Ice cubes

 The Taxi-Meister
Tall glass of tropical fruit Taksi (blue)
Small amount of red fruit syrup
A shotglass of Jagermeister
Add the small amount of syrup to the glass of Taksi. Pour the Jagermeister into the shotglass. Drop the shotglass (yes, including the glass) into the tall glass of Taksi and chug the entire glass in one go. This is a twist on the Jagerbomb which is a tall glass of red bull with a shotglass of Jagermeister.

Saving Money: Free Time

Of course going out is a big part of student life, but you don’t want to go bankrupt over it. Most of the money you spend on a night out will go to drinks and entrance fees for clubs. You can save some money on the latter by going to clubs before they start charging entrance fees, since a lot of clubs don’t start charging until around 11pm or midnight.
You can also save money on drinks by drinking beer instead of ordering expensive mix drinks. If you think you’re not going to be able to control yourself after a couple of drinks, put yourself on a budget and don’t bring any more money than that with you. Leave your debit- or creditcard at home so you really can only spend the money you’ve brought. Also keep an eye out for happy hours to save money on drinks.

Cook to Impress: Chicken and Broccoli Pasta Oven Dish

This recipe is not your standard student-serving one-dirtcheap dinner. However, it is a good, relatively easy recipe to impress your friends, roommates or parents.
If you've read our previous post on how to save money [here], you know that eating with your roommates or friends, rather than alone, saves money. This would be the perfect recipe for just those occassions!

Serves 4, takes about 40min

Ingredients
350g pasta shells, rigate or farfalle
250g broccoli
2 tbsp olive oil
350g chicken breasts, thinly sliced
175g mushrooms (Tip - use chestnut mushrooms for extra flavour)
4 tbsp sundried tomato paste
80g soft cheese with garlic and herbs (like Boursin)
250ml single cream (or sour cream or cooking cream)

For the topping:
spring onions, finely sliced
mature cheddar, or cheese of choice
1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
TIP - add 50g of flaked almonds.
